Culturally-Affirming counseling for individuals, couples, and families conveniently located in South St. Louis
Welcome to Scarberry Therapy, and perhaps the first step of your healing journey.
I realize that finding a therapist who is a good fit can be a process. And, for some who have never been in counseling, reaching out can be difficult. I applaud your courage and will do my utmost to help you transform your life. Many people I see have struggled with feeling like they are always the caretakers of others and have had difficulty choosing to help themselves. Others have felt separated from loved ones due to their sadness, anxiety, or abuse history. While mental health symptoms can cause one to feel helpless and hopeless, my experience in the mental health field has taught me a great deal about the strength, innate intelligence, and resilience of human beings and I believe that all of us possess the capability to overcome tremendous obstacles. I have had the privilege of working with numerous people as they have sought to better understand themselves and improve their quality of life. I believe that the knowledge base and capacity for change is something inherent in my clients and seek to help them access these tools. I believe in my clients and encourage them to have greater faith in themselves.
About Me:

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with 13 years experience working as a therapist and doing community-based crisis intervention. I have worked as a mobile outreach crisis counselor for the past 9 years (in addition to my practice) supporting clients who are in need of immediate assistance. I have experience treating grief and loss, sexual orientation concerns, depression, substance abuse, and anxiety. I am specially trained in Prolonged Exposure Therapy, an evidence-based treatment for symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I perform couples and individual counseling with diverse client populations, specializing in therapy with the LGBTQ community and those living with HIV/AIDS. Please note, that I do not do work to try to change an individual's sexual orientation, as consistent with standards set by the American Psychological Association.

My Treatment Philosophy: My therapeutic orientation/counseling style is an integration of psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and client-centered approaches, which basically means that I value being real and authentic with my clients and seek to help them gain insight into their lifelong patterns of behavior and alter counterproductive ways of thinking. I enjoy helping clients to maximize their potential by focusing upon their strengths and past successes. I believe that therapy is a cooperative endeavor that should assist the client in discovering his/her own abilities and coping strategies. I feel that most mental health concerns have developed over an extended period of time, and as such, require time to process in counseling. I relish the opportunity to support clients through trying situations and to help them to process grief.
Payment/Insurance Information: I accept HSI/Ryan White Funds, BlueCross/BlueShield, Healthlink, GHP and the other MHNET insurances (for MHNET, I ask that clients pay the allowed $40/session up front and submit my statements themselves for reimbursement). I can see other clients as an out-of-network provider or according to my income-based sliding scale that ranges from $50.00-$110.00/session. Income is subject to verification by past 2 bank statements/pay stubs and tax return. Payments can be made via cash, check, or credit card.
Availability: Evening and weekend appointments are available. Sessions are 50 minutes in length.
Cancellation Policy: 24 hour advance notice is requested for cancelling or rescheduling an appointment. Otherwise, a late cancellation or missed appointment fee will be charged.
Confidentiality Policy: Everything a client says is confidential, or private, with a few exceptions. Therapists are required to breach confidentiality if someone reveals they are currently suicidal or homicidal and a safety plan cannot be agreed upon, or if someone reports child or vulnerable adult abuse or neglect, or if court ordered by a judge. Most insurance companies require some form of a treatment plan as well as a client diagnosis to be submitted. All other disclosures of client information to third parties can only be made with client consent. As some clients have potentially sensitive concerns including HIV and legal issues, there will be no unnecessary disclosures (such as someone's HIV status or a past illegal act) when communicating with 3rd parties such as insurance companies as well as minimal references to such things in progress notes/elsewhere in the client record.
